This is one of my favourite small paintings that I have painted in recent times. Mainly because the original scene had no light so I had to invent the light effect. I have always considered the original scene just a reference point, somewhere to begin my journey not my final destination.

This scene was in an artist friends lounge room. The dark shape behind the statues head provided the perfect environment for me to get maximum tonal contrast and impact.

Primarily I’m a colourist, so this subject was right up my alley. The trick was not to make it too pretty, but to paint it with honesty and to make the light effect work.

I’m on a voyage of discovery when I’m painting. I go in search of new subject matter whenever possible. That’s where the inspiration for this painting came from. Being a creative artist is the harder road to travel but it’s definitely worth the journey.

With this painting I need to be accurate with my edges and focal points. The red walls are a bonus because it creates a marvellous colour harmony and ties the composition together.

This scene is a triple threat; figures, boats and water make a winning combination. It took extra patience and discipline to extract the effect that I was aiming to achieve. Occasionally certain subjects require just that little more effort. This was definitely one of those times.
